Conferences

Conference 2023 was held 4 November 2023 featuring Dr. Michael D. Lacopo.

Conference Schedule:

8:45 am – Welcome & Announcements

9:00 am – DECONSTRUCTING YOUR FAMILY TREE: RE-EVALUATING THE “EVIDENCE”. When information passed on from researcher to researcher doesn’t “add up,” it’s time to tear down the walls and rebuild anew. This methodology lecture shows how erroneous conclusions can sneak into our research uncontested. This lecture is pertinent especially today with so many online family trees that get cut and pasted into our own research.

10:30 am – METHODS FOR IDENTIFYING THE GERMAN ORIGINS OF AMERICAN IMMIGRANTS. If all you know from conventional records is “Germany” as a place of origin, then this lecture will help you mine other resources to locate WHERE in Germany your ancestor came from. Learn some new tricks to help you pinpoint the place of origin of your German-speaking ancestor!

12:30 pm – THE GENEALOGICAL PROOF STANDARD IN MOTION: A CASE STUDY. “Genealogical Proof Standard” is the genealogist’s buzz phrase of this decade, but what does it mean? How does one critically assess the information they have, and how does one document lead to another? How can we bolster our hunches and hypotheses with DNA analysis? Follow me as we seek to determine the parentage of Eliza Ann Sample through a slew of records and see if you can determine what “next step” will be the one over the brick wall!

2:00 pm – “I AM POOR, OBSCURE, PLAIN, AND LITTLE.” RESEARCHING THE INVISIBLE ANCESTORS. If your ancestors had little money, they did not buy and sell land, they did not leave wills or probates, they did not purchase stones for graves. How do you find them? This lecture will show you how!

All day genealogy conferences have been sponsored by the Lake County (IL) Genealogical Society each November since 1993. They are normally held on the first or second Saturday of November.

Conference 2019 was a great success!  Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped make an enjoyable and informative conference. The main speakers,  Tony Burroughs, FUGA and David A. Stumpf, MD, PhD., were both entertaining and knowledgeable.

Conferences 2020 – 2022 were not held due to the pandemic. We held regular meetings in November in lieu of the conference.
